Why 100 is the centre of the scale by definition
IQ is a relative measure with no natural units. There is no absolute quantity of reasoning that equals 100 — the number exists because test publishers take a large representative sample, set that sample's average to 100, and set one standard deviation to 15 points. Every other score, including 90, is a statement about distance from that sample average. How IQ tests work walks through the norming step.
That construction is why the scale has no ceiling or floor in principle, and why a score is only ever as good as the sample behind it. Change the reference group and every number changes with it, without anybody's reasoning having altered.
Why the Average band is twenty points wide
Most classification bands span ten points. Average spans twenty, from 90 to 109. That is not an oversight — it reflects that the curve is at its tallest in the middle, so a twenty-point band there still describes a group people recognise as "typical", where a twenty-point band out at 140 would sweep together scores that differ enormously in rarity.
It also means the Average label covers real internal variation. At 90 you are 0 points into the band with 19 above you — the classification alone does not distinguish those positions, which is why the percentile is a more informative figure than the label.

About 50% of the population falls between 90 and 109. That is the single most useful thing to know about a score here: it is the most ordinary outcome there is, not a shortfall. Around 75% of people score at or above 90, and roughly 25% score below it.
The crowding has a second effect worth knowing. A handful of points moves your rank a surprising distance, while the same handful of points out at 145 barely moves it at all.
90 buys the largest change of label of any single point on the scale
Score 89 and the classification table calls you Low Average. Score 90 — one point higher, comfortably inside the measurement error of any test — and the same table calls you Average. That single point moves you into the widest band on the scale, the one containing about half the population.
No other point does as much labelling work for as little measured difference. It is the clearest demonstration available that the classification labels are a filing system laid over a continuous curve: 89 and 90 are the same score for every practical purpose, and the two words attached to them are not remotely the same in how people hear them.
Inside Average, below the midpoint
90 occupies a position the classification cannot express: inside the Average band, and 10 points below the population midpoint. Both descriptions are accurate, and people tend to reach for whichever suits the argument they are making.
The resolution is to use the percentile instead. At 90 that is about the 25th — above roughly 25% of people. That single figure carries the information the label rounds away, and it is the number worth quoting if anyone asks what the score means.
What a few points inside this band actually change
Very little that is observable. People across 90 to 109 do the same jobs, take the same courses, and make the same kinds of decisions. With a measurement error of roughly ±4 points on any single test, a gap of five points inside this band is not reliably a gap at all — the same person can produce both numbers a fortnight apart.
What does vary across this range is not visible in the composite: how quickly unfamiliar abstract material clicks, and how much working memory a task can demand before it becomes effortful. Those show up in study and in technical work rather than in daily life.
The same score, two different minds
A composite of 90 can be arrived at in many ways, and the routes are not equivalent. One person reaches it evenly across every subtest; another combines strong verbal reasoning with below-average processing speed; a third is strong on spatial reasoning and weaker on working memory. All three score 90, and all three think differently.
This is the main limitation of any single figure, and it bites hardest in the middle of the distribution where the largest number of people sit. The subtest profile behind the composite is the more actionable information; the composite is just its average.
Because 90 sits at the very bottom of a twenty-point band, the label is doing less work than usual: the strand profile behind a 90 typically looks much more like an 88 than like a 108, even though 90 and 108 share a classification.
How many people sit between 90 and 100
About a quarter of the population scores in the ten points between 90 and 100. That is a bigger share than the Superior band (120–129) and everything above 130 combined, which together account for under 9% of people. The density of the middle is easy to lose sight of in a classification table, because every row is printed the same width.
