How IQ scores are classified
Your result falls into one of these bands. For the full explanation, see our IQ score chart.
| IQ Range | Classification | % of People | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| ≤69 | Extremely Low | ~2.2% | Well below average. On clinical tests this range may warrant professional assessment. |
| 70–79 | Borderline | ~6.7% | Below average reasoning on this scale. |
| 80–89 | Low Average | ~16.1% | Slightly below the population average. |
| 90–109 | Average | ~50% | The middle of the distribution — where most people score. |
| 110–119 | High Average | ~16.1% | Above average reasoning ability. |
| 120–129 | Superior | ~6.7% | Notably above average — roughly the top 10%. |
| 130–144 | Gifted | ~2.1% | The conventional 'gifted' threshold (130) and above — top ~2%. Mensa qualifies here. |
| 145+ | Highly Gifted | ~0.1% | Exceptionally rare — the far right tail of the distribution. |
Frequently asked questions
Is the IQ test really free?+
Yes — completely. Your IQ score, percentile, classification, full cognitive analysis, strengths and weaknesses, and written interpretation are all free, with no account and no credit card required. There is no catch and nothing is locked behind a payment.
Is this a real IQ test?+
Yes. It uses established reasoning item types — pattern, logical, numerical, spatial, and verbal — and scores them on the standard deviation-IQ scale (mean 100, SD 15) used by professional tests. It is a real, research-based estimate, not a novelty quiz, though like any short online test it is an estimate rather than a clinical instrument.
How accurate is this free online IQ test?+
It gives a reliable estimate on the standard mean-100, SD-15 scale, with a stated confidence range so you can see its precision. Like all online tests, it is not a clinical diagnosis — a formal IQ assessment is administered in person by a qualified professional. Read the range, not the single point.
Can I take the IQ test online on any device?+
Yes. The test runs entirely in your browser on phone, tablet, or computer, with no app or download, and your results appear instantly the moment you finish.
What makes a good free IQ test?+
Rather than grade ourselves against a checklist we wrote, it's better to point to independent standards. The APA/AERA/NCME Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing emphasise the same qualities a careful reader should look for: recognised, validated reasoning item types; scoring on a standard, normed scale (here the mean-100, SD-15 scale); reporting measurement error rather than false precision; secure scoring; and honesty about what a test can and cannot do. Those principles are what we have tried to build this test around — and our methodology page explains exactly how, so you can judge it for yourself.
How long does the test take?+
About 12 minutes. The test has 20 questions across several reasoning types, and you move at your own pace.
Do I need to create an account?+
No. You can take the test and see your full result without an account. Creating one is optional and lets you save your history over time.
What do I get at the end?+
Your IQ score, your percentile, your classification band, a view of where you land on the distribution, a breakdown across eight cognitive abilities, and a free, verifiable certificate with a tamper-evident ID anyone can check.
How are the Working Memory and Processing Speed scores measured?+
Both are measured directly from dedicated items, not inferred from unrelated questions. Working Memory uses short span and n-back-style tasks (holding and manipulating a sequence in mind); Processing Speed uses quick symbol-matching items scored partly on how fast you respond, with timing measured server-side. Because the test is short, each of the eight sub-scores rests on a handful of items and carries more measurement error than your overall score — read them as a profile of relative strengths, not exact figures.
Could my score change if I retake the test later?+
Possibly, by a few points. Your underlying ability is fairly stable, but a single sitting is affected by fatigue, focus, and familiarity with the format, and our norms are provisional and refined over time as more results accumulate. That's normal for any short test — it's why we report a confidence range rather than a single exact number, and why the range is the more meaningful output.
Is the test suitable for children?+
No. The test is designed and normed for ages 13 and up, and it asks for a self-reported age before it begins; anyone under 13 is directed to guidance for parents instead. Children's cognitive testing needs individually administered, age-appropriate instruments delivered by a trained professional.
